TV Representation Examination

What is representation?
Representation is the way that media re-present individuals, groups, events and issues.

Stereotypes: media institutions use stereotypes because the audience will instantly understand them. Think of stereotypes as ‘visual shortcuts’. They are repeated so often that we assume that they are normal or true.

Archetypes: this is the ‘ultimate’ stereotype, for example, the white stiletto wearing, big busted, brainless blonde bimbo.

Countertype: a representation that challenges traditional stereotypical associations of groups, people or places.

Binary opposite: the way that opposites are used to create interest in media texts, such as good/bad, coward/hero, youth/age, black/white…
